While my kids were teenagers, I felt like they were trying to kill me. I know they needed me around to cook, clean, drive and occasionally provide love and scorned advice…

There was so much angst on all sides of the Joy.

I felt like we were just fixtures on the wall, necessary objects for them to move through the paces of this fraught period of their lives. I was fiercely protective and also probably way too lenient.
